Organize It: How to Become Organized

I have loads of people ask me for tips on how to become organized; so I wrote this post in repose. Organizing, decluttering, and cleaning a house can be a small task or a humongous task. It all depends on the severity of your house, the size of your house, and how much you own. Don't believe that you can get organized now. Proper organization of a home requires time, determination, and a bit of creativity.

Getting organized is simple enough in theory, but like so many other things, can be tainted by our human errors or small unforeseeable bumps in the road. But like most things in life that are worth doing/having, being organized is something that can save you a ton of time, hassle, and headaches. Unfortunately, getting organized and living a simple life isn't quite so simple. But if I can do it, anyone can (I promise)!

It is simply finding a system or solution that works for you. A lot of work goes into organizing your house, and even more work goes into maintaining it. I'm sorry to say that organizing your home is just a small step in the process. Make sure that you always put things back in their place (no matter how tired you are)! I'm guilty of cleaning, organizing, and decluttering a space, and then completely trashing it afterwards.

It's tempting to just leave an empty plate or pair of dirty pants in the floor. Initially, I will begin to argue with my self. On the one hand, I consider the time and effort I put into making my room look nice. But, after a hard day at work, working on my blog, and everything else I just don't feel like walking into the kitchen to just place a single, dirty plate in the sink. Here are some tips and techniques on how to become organized.

1. Go through everything that you own and determine if you want to keep it or kick it to the curb. If you are having problems cleaning out the things that you don't need, visit my article: How to Declutter Anything and Simplify Your Life

2. Take all of your unwanted items to Good Will or read my article: Sell Your Clothes Online 101

3. Make lists to make sure that you always complete every task when it needs to be done.

4. Place a large bowl and hooks by the front door. You will always have a place for your keys and any little knickknacks that were being stored in your pockets.

5. Keep copies of every important document and store the originals in a safe. Store the copies you made somewhere that will not be difficult to locate at a moments notice.

6. Have a trash can in every room of your house. This is especially true in any bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

7. Develop a mail in and mail out system to manage your paper mess.

8. Hang a calendar on the fridge and put important dates, appointment dates, and emergency phone numbers at the bottom.

9. Every item you own should have a proper home to go to after every use.

10. Make an emergency bag that is left in your car at all times. Try to envision anything you might need for any situation you could encounter. For starters, grab an umbrella, an extra set of clothes, sunblock, sunglasses, a flashlight, a lighter or box of matches,

11. Know what your priorities are and stick to them!

12. If an item is used everyday, put it somewhere that can be easily accessed. It is a really bad decision to put an item that is used every day somewhere that out of the way and hard to reach.

13. Try to leave some extra free storage space. Trust me, it will come in handy when you bring home new stuff.

14. Whatever storage solutions you use, make sure that it works for you. If not, just think about your problem and the easiest way to fix it. For instance, if you have a problem with mail collecting, stand over a trash can the next time you sort through your mail.

15. Keep all of the basic tools handy in your house. When I say basic tools I am referring to tools such as, a hammer, a Flathead screwdriver, a Phillips head screwdriver, and a pair of needle nose pliers.

How to Declutter Anything and Simplify Your Life

Do you want to learn a few strategies that will show you how to declutter any room?

The holidays are just around the corner, and if you're anything like me, you haven't had the energy or time to clean up the occasional mess. Now, after weeks of procrastination, your home is cluttered, messy, and chaotic. Lets face it, not everyone has the time to scrub their entire house from top to bottom every week. After a while, everything just begins to pile up all at once (or so it seems). Once most people begin to see the clutter, they immediately go into "This place is such a wreck! Its going to be impossible for me to go to work, work out, and clean this place up before my parents stop by for their fair share of Holiday cheer. Or at least that is what I use to do. Between work, staying (moderately) healthy, taking care of my furry babies, and trying to squeeze in a few hours of quality time with my husband. Honestly, with all of this stress, something has to give.

How to Declutter Anything & Simplify Your Life: Technique #1

The trick to decluttering anything from a desk to an entire room, is to work in small, reasonable chunks of time. Simply, pick a part of the room; then, clean, tidy, and organize. Start small, the first place you clean and tidy doesn't necessarily have to be the epicenter of the chaos. Here's an example: Let's say that you want to declutter the livingroom. First, clean off a desk or your coffee table. After you're done cleaning that one spot, just walk away. Do other errands that you would normally do. Spare just a few minutes every day, and before you know it, your house will be clutter free. This strategy has helped me get motivated to organize and clean up my living space several times over the years.

How to Declutter Anything & Simplify Your Life: Technique #2

Another strategy to tackle cluttered, unkempt spaces is to clean up or pick up one specific type of item throughout the entire room in one go. For instance, you would walk through the entire room you are focusing on, and gather up all of the paper clutter. Collecting the items won't take a long time. In fact this strategy allows you to group together alike or similar items; which makes organizing everything a breeze! My Godmother taught me this strategy. She practically swears by it, and she has the cleanest, most organized house of anyone that I know.

Don't Fall Back Into Old Habits

Remember that you are decluttering not only your house but your life as well. Once you reach a point where you are satisfied with your organized, orderly home, do not get comfortable. Try not to let clutter gather up again in your house. It is easier to just put up that sweater, wash that plate, or paw through the mail than it is to go through all of your knickknacks again. Cluttered, disorderly spaces do not provide the right environment for you to simplify your life. I plan to start sharing more simple ways to declutter your home and simplify your life. Declutter Your Home: How to organize your bathroom

How to Organize Your Bathroom

Bathroom clutter is an eye sore. You can have the most whimsical, beautiful bathroom in the world, but if you have piles of dirty clothes, damp towels, and a vast assortment of beauty products just scattered about... Well, lets just say that no one will care about how pretty your bathroom could be. They will only see the clutter and chaos.

Make your bathroom beautiful and clutter free with simple storage solutions.

Organizing a bathroom can be a difficult task, but with a bit of time and creativity, you can turn your bathroom chaos into a room of beauty. Ladies, we all (I'm most definitely guilty of this) spend a little too much time in the bathroom. We have to make sure that our hair isn't sticking up in weird tuffs, our clothes match, and who hasn't spent over twenty minutes applying makeup for a special occasion?

As women, we use the bathroom to beautify and pamper ourselves. So, why are you disrupting your you time with clutter. Our bathrooms should be a place where we are relaxed, comfortable, and confident; so, the space should show that. Every girl deserves a beautifully organized and completely functional bathroom.

Are you stuck with an itty-bitty bathroom?

Trust me, I feel your pain. I've done my fair share of moving and typically I'll get stuck with a small, "cozy" bathroom. Small bathrooms aren't really a problem for me... That is until I cannot fit all of my bath products comfortably in a cabinet.

I've noticed other little piles of chaos too.

  • My styling tools are always haphazardly lounging around the sink.
  • I lost an entire pack of shaving razors.
  • Every time I take a shower I'm bombarded with miscellaneous bottles attack me. Well, mostly my toes, but it still hurts!
  • And I have absolutely no place to put my towels and robe.

Small bathrooms can have a ton of personality and be efficient too!

Small bathrooms are pretty much inevitable for most of us at some point or another. Instead of living in the chaos, try incorporating a few storage solutions that don't take up any of your precious shelf space, such as, hooks. There are tons of nifty little storage solutions that you can use to create your dream bathroom.

How to organize your bathroom the easy way.

As I mentioned before, there are several simple storage solutions that you can use to organize your bathroom. Here are just a few of the easiest storage solutions.
  • Hooks
  • Baskets
  • Over the door hooks
  • Small containers

Image C/O morguefile.com

By implementing these simple, storage solutions you can have:

  • All damp towels off the ground.
  • A spot for your robe or other clothes.
  • A safe place to store your styling tools, such as, a hair straightener and a blow dryer.
  • A spot to hang your luffa or sponge in the shower.
  • Hang up your hair brushes, hand mirrors, and other small beauty tools.
  • A place in your shower to (safely) put your shampoo, conditoner, soaps, lotions, and other bottles.

And that's just a small list of things that hooks can do for you and your bathroom. If you have used one of these storage solutions or have another storage solution, feel free to leave your story or comments below!

Sell Clothes Online for Cash

Sell Clothes Online For Cash

Long foldover skirt / Horizontal striped skirt / Money Paper Clips / Open Air 12X12 Maggie Holmes Flea Market Paper by Crate Paper - Two...

Have you thought about selling clothes online?

Thursday, I gave an easy solution to get rid of your extra clothing. If you missed the post, you can find it here.

I use to have a TON of clothes. Most of them, I never wore. I bought them or someone gave them to me, and I found that either I had gained weight, lost weight, or just simply didn't like the item. But, I refused to get rid of any of it. You know, just in case I ever wanted to wear that item in a couple of years.

After moving out of my parents' house a few years ago, I learned a lot about the value of closet space. Most of my apartments or houses have had small closets or none at all! On a side note, having absolutely no closet is a total bummer. I found that not all of my clothes would fit in the spaces that I had.

Plus, lugging around countless bags filled to their busting point witth my clothes became tiresome everytime that I decided to move. Something had to give, so I meticiously went through all of my clothes, piece by piece. Finally, I was able to part with over half of my clothes.

Afterwards, I was left with several bags of unwanted clothing. Normally, I donate all of my clothes to a foundation or charity, such as, Good Will or the Salvation Army. I donate because its simple, easy, and I can help out the less fortunate.

I plan on selling a few items that are in my “get rid of” pile; so, I have complied a list of five websites where you can sell your used, unwanted clothing. Getting rid of unwanted items is a great way to earn some extra pocket cash.

Where Can I sell My Clothes For Cash?

1.) ThredUp

Thredup is very specific about what brands of clothes that they will accept. Check out their guidelines here. There are two ways that you can get paid here, you can recieve credit towards other Thredup items, or you can have your cash sent to your PayPal account.

2.) Twice
Twice is different from any other site thatallows you to sell your clothes online; because, instead of listing the item and waiting for someone to buy it Twice sends you a free bag to send in your clothing. Twice does all of the work. They will photograph, take measurements, and everything else! Twice has a calculator that will help you figure out how much money you can make.

3.) Dresm
Dresm is an online community for the fashion lovers and environmental friendly people.
You will be charged 15 cents for every listing that you list in their community. When an item you have listed does sell, Dresm will charge a 3.5% flat rate fee. Dresm sends out payments using Paypal.

Poshmark is an online community of buyers and sellers. It is easy to list an item and can be done within a minute. Poshmark offers photo lenses and filters to make sure that your photograph is the best that it can be. Attend a Posh Party and sell your unwantedclothing items even faster. The site even lets you link up with your friends' items as well. Once the item is sold, you will print out a free shipping label and ship it off. After you have sold an item, Poshmark will deduct a flat fee of 20% from your earnings. The site allows you to cash out anytime you want. now what could be better than that?

Tips for Selling Used Clothes Online

  1. Wash all clothing items you want to sell. Make sure that the item isn't wrinkled, stained, or anything else.
  2. Write a detailed description of the clothing item. The more people know, the more they will be interested in your item. Always, mention any flaw that the piece has, such as, stains, rips, tears, or discolorations. Belive me, its better to be honest than sorry in the long run.
  3. List your items for reasonable prices.
  4. Make sure that your pictures are eye catching and beautiful. Show the item at different angles, have a friend wear the piece, and make sure that the lighting accturately represents the color of the item.
Have a great day!

Storage Solutions: Store your seasonal clothes

Seasonal clothing is great for keeping warm during the chilly, winter months or staying cool during the warm, summer months. Bulky jackets, sweaters, long sleeved shirts, and snow boots are necessary items to have in your possession, but these things can take up a ton of valuable space. The same can be said for your summer clothing, including, bathing suits, shorts, and flip flops.

Storing seasonal clothing can be tricky. I have a bad habit of storing my seasonal clothing and then the weather changes or I have to go on a trip. So of course, I have to dig out whatever item I need, and then store the extra items for a second time.

The way you choose to store your seasonal clothing should fit into and work with your life. Personally, I choose to store my seasonal clothing underneath mybedin a combination of space saving bags and a storage trunk. But, my closet is extremely small and cannot handle holding my everyday clothes and all of my seasonal stuff too.

Make whatever storage solution you choose, work for you! Think about the size of your closet. Is it large, small, or basically non-existent (trust me, I've been there)? Are you willing to store your extra clothing underneath your bed? Just make sure that whatever way you choose to store your seasonal clothing that it is easily accessible and out of the way.

Storage Solutions to Consider

There are several ways to store you extra, seasonal clothing and keep your closet organized. Here are just a few simple, inexpensive storage solutions.

1. Trunks
2. Collpasible closets
3. Space saving bags
4. Clothes racks
5. Luggage

Storage Solution Tips

-Make sure that your seasonal clothes are out of the way.
-Make sure that your seasonal clothes can be accessed at any time.
-Make sure that your animals (if you have any) cannot get into your seasonal clothes while they are begin stored.

How to Organize Clothes

Have you ever experienced the gut-wretching feeling of opening your closet door? It happens to the best of us. Life doesn't always give us time to properly put away that shirt that didn't match or those unflattering pants. Organizing your clothes just kinda falls to the way side.

Plus, most of us have a lot of clothes that are for certain situations. Think about it, there are only a few of us who can say that every piece of clothing in their possession is absolutely necessary and worn regularly. I've found shirts from ten years ago in the mysteries of the closet.

The sheer wreckage behind that closed door haunts me. But I never, ever want to start sorting out that mess because it looks like it will take forever. But, trust me, its better to face the closet beast. Imagine actually being able to find what you need all the time. Plus, once you start organizing your clothes can be an easy, enjoyable task.

Sounds too good to be true? Trust me, it really isn't...
Image C/O MorgueFile

Here's how to organize your clothes

First things first...

Go through your clothes. Touch every piece of clothing you own. Think about the last time you wore it. How often do you wear it? Does it go with a particular outfit? Does this particular clothing item make you feel good when you wear it?

Know when to keep clothing and when to get rid of it.

If you haven't worn the item in the last year, it doesn't go with any outfit you own, or it makes you feel terrible about yourself, you should probably get rid of it. If you're not going to wear it; its just taking up space in your closet.

Go through all of your clothes and weed out the things that are too big, too small, or you haven't worn in the past year. This doesn't have to be done in one sitting. Divide up the work into small pieces and really think about the particular piece of clothing. It really is a drag to throw something away and want it a week or two down the line.

Make piles for your clothing.

Making piles really helps me to organize everything quickly. Typically, I'll make three piles: keep, maybe, and get rid of. I bag up all of the items in the "get rid of" pile and write “get rid of” on the bag with a sharpie.

The "maybe" pile

Then, I take all of the maybes and put them in a bag and write “maybe” on it. I'll keep this bag for at least three months, just in case I need something. If I do need to take something out of the maybe bag, I will hang it up like a normal piece of clothing.

Finally...

Finally, I hang up all of my clothing with the hook of the hanger facing the opposite way. When I wear the particular item, I will hang the clothing normally. If, there are any hangers that are still in the opposite way I know to get rid of that particular item.

I try to clean out my closet seasonally. I try to thin out my wardrobe in the winter and summer.

Have a great day!
